Beautiful ‘Melancholia’ screens at Nenagh Arts Centre
Lars Von Trier’s epic film ‘Melancholia’ is to be shown at Nenagh Arts Centre on Thursday 16th February.
A favourite of arthouse audiences, this past year, the film joins two stories – a family wedding and the issues it brings up and the impending doom of the planet as a whole through a cosmic event. Justine, played by Kirsten Dunst is struggling to be happy even though it should be the happiest day of her life – an extravagant wedding paid for by her sister and brother-in-law who are trying to keep the bride and all the guests in-line. Meanwhile, Melancholia, a blue planet, is hurtling towards the Earth. Claire, Justine’s sister, is struggling to maintain composure with fear of the impending disaster.
With the personal part of the film split between the two sisters tales, ‘Melancholia’ opens with music from Wagner’s ‘Tristan und Isolde’, mourning and apocalyptic with disturbing images of a world not right. The new planet is first seen by Justine as they pause on their way to the wedding party. It is the brightest of the evening stars. During an undefined period of days it grows larger and larger, until it fills the sky. The overwhelming planetary event is played out though both characters reactions to it.
Through stunning visuals and sound, Von Triers grandiose vision is realized with his cast – Dunst, John Hurt, Charlotte Gainsbourg and others. He has made one of the most unforgettable, unique films of this year.
