Irish rugby star and GOAL Patron Jamie Heaslip is taking time out from Ireland’s World Cup campaign to encourage schoolchildren and workers from all over Tipperary to take part in GOAL Jersey Day on Friday, October 7th, and help the organisation deliver aid to some of the poorest people in the world.

One of the country’s most popular annual fundraising events, GOAL Jersey Day invites members of the public to wear the jersey of their favourite team for the day and make a suggested donation of €2 to GOAL. Each year, thousands of Irish schools and companies take part right across Ireland.

Heaslip witnessed the impact of GOAL’s work with the poor first-hand earlier this summer, when he helped migrant families make bricks in 35 degree heat in the slums of Kolkata.

And the Leinster and Lions powerhouse says that all monies raised on the day will make “a massive difference” to people in communities similar to those he visited with GOAL.

“I spent time at some of the schools in Kolkata where GOAL has provided water points and sanitation facilities and it was very apparent the positive effect that they were having,” he said.

“Clean, hot and cold running water are things that we take for granted in our schools and homes back home, but by providing these services here, at such a small cost, GOAL is making a massive difference to the lives of children in the developing world.”

Meanwhile, GOAL has come up with a number of fun ideas to encourage even more schools to get involved in Jersey Day this year. Students can visit the GOAL website and watch Jamie in Kolkata; they can take part in writing and drawing competitions, and send in photos and stories, a number of which will be selected and published on the website.
