Lady Wilde at Nenagh Arts Centre

Nenagh Arts Centre presents Royal Shakespeare Company actress Patricia Leventon in ‘Lady Wilde’ on Thursday the 8th of September next.

This play depicts the courageous and strong minded, mother of Oscar Wilde who defied her family’s pro-Union politics and under the name of Speranza, electrified Ireland with her passionate tirades in verse and prose against the English. She married the brilliant surgeon Dr William Wilde, later knighted by Queen Victoria. At one point she bravely defended him in a libel case that was the sensation of Dublin, and foreshadowed her son Oscar’s trial some thirty years later. Witty, often outrageous, with very strong feminist views, she was most memorable in the midst of literary companions. Former Royal Shakespeare Company actor Patricia Leventon captures her in full flight.

The Belfast Telegraph said about the show: “Patricia Leventon’s one woman show portrays the life of Lady Wilde

in an imaginative and informative style. This show provides great insight about Oscar’s life and the influence of his mother.”

The play begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday 8th September 8pm. Admission is €10 and tickets can be had from Nenagh Arts Centre in the Town Hall in Banba Square or online at www.nenagharts.com
