Joan Conquers the Needle with Mid Tipp Hillwalkers
Photograph shows Joan Quinn Upperchurch celebrating the success of her first ascent to the summit of the Great Needle of Dunshean. This well-known sea stack off the Kerry coast rises 140 ft to a vertigo inducing one metre square platform while reaching the start of the climb involves a 180 ft abseil down a sheer sea cliff. On the same day the Needle was also successfully ascended for the first time by Josephine Tobin, Turtulla, Thurles and Brian Dunne, Templederry, which completed an excellent hat-trick for the Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers Group.
You won’t have to worry about vertigo but you will certainly have a great time if you take part on Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers next big event, which is strictly for those who enjoy keeping their two feet firmly on the ground. The 14th annual Autumn Charity Challenge, which this year takes place among the unmatched scenery of the Cooley and Mourne Mountains, offers all comers some of the best walking in Ireland suitable for all fitness levels.
The event, which takes place from, Fri Oct 14 to Sun Oct 16, is open to all – including newcomers to outdoor walking – wishing to support the cause of blind people.
