Nenagh Arts Centre screens the classic musical ‘Singin’ In the Rain’ in a special event outside the Town Hall in Banba Sqaure, this Saturday, 30th July at 10 p.m.
Telling the story of how a group of silent movie actors deal with the changeover to ‘talkies’, the film includes many great songs and dance set-pieces including the classic street performance of Gene Kelly ‘singing in the rain.’
Brendan Maher at the Arts Centre says: “We had a great response to our last open-air screening and this time, we are screening a bona-fide classic. ‘Singin’ in The Rain’ has been much-loved by audiences through the years and the current ‘Glee’ generation have taken it to their hearts again. People may not know, but Gene Kelly holidayed in Puckane in the early 1970’s so although his forebears were from Cork, North Tipperary does have a tenuous connection with him. He co-directed the film with Stanley Donen working mainly on the dance sequences and the film really is regarded as a feel-good masterpiece. The screening on Saturday night is a community event in Banba Square outside the Arts Centre in the Town Hall. We want to encourage use of the Square for public events and hope these screenings will provide added impetus for that.”
The screening is free, although a donation to support the running of such events is expected, and will take place weather permitting. Tea, coffee, juices and popcorn will be on sale. Patrons are advised to bring warm clothing and something to sit on as chairs will be limited. All are welcome.
