County Tipperary Community Games News
Congratulations to our President, Breeda Christie who received a National Volunteer in Sport Award for Community Games & Athletics in the AVIVA Stadium on Tuesday 31st May. The ‘National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sports’, celebrate the contributions of volunteers to Irish sport. These awards are an initiative of the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Sports & are also supported by the Community Foundation of Ireland and the Irish Sports Council. Breeda was nominated by the Tipperary Sports Partnership for her dedication to sport. Breeda first met with Community Games founder, Joe Connolly in Walkinstown in the late 1960s & from there she went on to set up County Tipperary Community Games in 1968. She still plays a very big role in County Tipperary Community Games where at 80 years young, she is the Co-Ordinator for Hard-Court Tennis every year & she hosted the County Swimming Finals in Tipperary Town in 2010. She also plays a very active role at all of our Executive & Committee Meetings & is always a very enthusiastic & effective Assembler & P.A. Operator at our Athletics Finals every year. Our thanks to you Breeda for all your years of service to Community Games & the children of Tipperary.
Another of the County’s hardworking volunteers, Seamus Hartigan, Templemore A.C. received a “People of the Year Award” last weekend from Templemore Town Council for his dedication to sport. Seamus is well known around Templemore for the enormous amount of voluntary work he does for young people, particularly in the area of athletics & he has also been instrumental in reviving Community Games in the town. Well done Seamus on a well deserved award, keep up the good work.
