TIPP QUALIFY FOR MUNSTER SH SEMI-FINAL
Congratulations to the Tipperary senior hurlers on their 8 point victory over Cork in the Munster Senior Hurling championship quarter-final at Semple Stadium last Sunday. They will now play Clare in the Munster semi-final at Limerick on Sunday June 19. It will be the first championship meeting of the counties since the Munster semi-final of 2009 when Tipperary won narrowly by 3-18 to 1-22. It will be the 50th championship encounter between Tipp and Clare with Tipp winning 34, Clare 11 and 4 draws in the previous 49 games between them. The other semi-final will be played between Limerick and Waterford at Semple Stadium on Sunday June 12.
TIPP V CORK INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Hard luck to the Intermediate hurlers who were defeated by Cork in the Munster Quarter-final at Semple Stadium on Sunday. Thanks to all the players and management for their work preparing for this game over the last few months.
TIPP V WATERFORD UNDER 21 HURLING
Good luck to the Tipperary under 21 hurlers and management for their Munster quarter-final against Waterford at Semple Stadium on Wednesday evening June 1 at 7.30pm. Both stands will be open for the game. Extra time will apply in the event of a draw at full time. It will be the 16th meeting of the counties in the under 21 championship with Tipp winning 12 and Waterford 3 of the previous encounters. Their last meeting was in Dungarvan in 2009 when Waterford won by 3-21 to 2-14.
TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW
The first draw in the 2011-2012 Tipperary GAA Clubs draw takes place this Friday night June 3 in Campions Pub Templetuohy at 10pm. The star prize of a Skoda Superb or €30,000 cash alternative will be won on the night along with numerous other cash prizes and a holiday. Also there will be a lucky club that will win the first €1,000 club prize in our new draw. Over 30 prizes will be given away on the night, so come along and support us in our first draw for 2011-2012. There is still time to join if you have not already done so. LAUNCH OF MICKEY “THE RATTLER” BYRNE’S BOOK
Congratulations to Mickey “The Rattler” Byrne, Michael Dundon and the Byrne family on the launch of Mickey’s book at the Anner Hotel Thurles on Saturday night last. There was a huge turnout which was a fitting tribute to Mickey’s status as a hurling legend and renowned storyteller. It will be a night long to be remembered and our thanks are due to the Byrne family for their great hospitality in extending a great welcome to all present. The book will go on sale this week in all bookshops and can be purchased online by emailing info@bookworm.ie.
COUNTY SENIOR LONG PUCK FINAL
Well done to county minor goalkeeper, Shane Hassett of Drom and Inch, who won the county final of the senior long puck for the second successive year at Thurles Racecourse on Saturday week last, May 21st. Shane now goes forward to represent Tipperary in the Munster final which takes place in Thurles Racecourse on Saturday July 9. Runner up for the second year in a row was Brian Delaney Toomevara. The other contestants were Martin Dunne (Moyle Rovers), Diarmuid Cullen (Clonoulty-Rossmore) and Colm Canning (Toomevara).
NATIONAL INCLUSION FORUM 2011
The GAA and along with the Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football Associations recently hosted the National Inclusion Forum 2011 in Croke Park. The Forum sought to further the work of the GAA Inclusion and Integration Office in introducing people from minority groups and non-traditional GAA communities to the family of Gaelic Games. The day-long event was attended by Minister of Social Protection, Joan Burton TD, in addition to approximately 120 GAA and minority group representatives, community leaders, policy makers and those working in the areas of integration and inclusion in Ireland. The key note address that set the agenda for the National Inclusion Forum was presented by Cormac Russell of the Asset Based Community Development Institute of North Western University of Chicago. Cormac Russell outlined the new Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to building stronger communities. The approach seeks to remove the focus of community development from monetary investment and reliance on external resources, by empowering those within the communities to work through and solve their own problems. He encouraged the GAA and National Inclusion Forum participants to follow this model when exploring possibilities and planning for tangible change in the areas of Inclusion and Integration, in and through Gaelic Games. As a result of the National Inclusion Forum 2011 the GAA National Inclusion Office will publish a report detailing specific recommendations to broaden participation in Gaelic Games and GAA Clubs around the country. The report will focus on ways to increase inclusion of: people with disabilities and disabling conditions, people from the Travelling community, Ethnic minorities, those from non-traditional GAA Communities and people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
