News from Thurles Education Centre May 2011
This month Thurles Education Centre teamed up with Tipperary Libraries to take part in a number of Bealtainne events. Our students learned the craft of glass painting from Jane Carragher and were treated to a dance workshop led by Rosalie Butler as part of this annual festival.
We were honoured to attend a talk by Holocaust survivor and author of “Final Witness” Zoltan Zinn-Collis. During the talk Zoltan spoke about his horrific childhood in a Nazi concentration camp. Despite the topic Zoltan instilled a sense of positivity in his audience. His will to survive and lack of bitterness was an inspiration to all who attended.
At the beginning of the month staff in Thurles Education Centre attended a workshop in assistive reading technology in Thurles Library. This literacy and typing aid is available for all to use in the library and our students are looking forward to testing it out during the summer programme.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to head librarian Ann Marie Brophy and to the staff in Thurles library for inviting us to these events and for being so accommodating and welcoming throughout the year. We would also like to thank Librarian Lorraine Treacy for facilitating the assistive reading technology workshop.
We have recently had the pleasure of Artist Mairead Cunningham assisting in the art room. Mairead completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in GMIT and has a range of experience teaching art in a community context. Mairead brought an alternative and refreshing perspective to the art room and encouraged the students to challenge themselves creatively.
Congratulations are due to our students who recently completed their FETAC folders. Their hard work and dedication could be seen in the selection of FETAC level 3 and level 4 folders which were submitted for assessment.
We would like to wish the best of luck to our Junior Certificate students who will be sitting their exams in June. We are very proud of the work they have completed so far for their Junior Certificate art and CSPE projects.
