Cross Community & Cross Border Major Football Festival in East Belfast
Enjoy, Believe and Achieve – the ‘Best’ way to enjoy the summer!
Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th July 2011 – range of sites across East Belfast.
July 2011 will be the third year of the cross-community and cross-border George Best Community Cup. This unique tournament seeks to bring young people together from all backgrounds to enjoy the sport and spend time developing relationships with each other. “At a time when there is often tension across communities, we are working to bring them together. We want them to celebrate their love of football together, but also to celebrate all the backgrounds they come from and communities they represent.” David McConnell the Committee Chairperson explains “We have had young people from all across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland every year, and the third year will be the same.”
Lead by a group of dedicated East Belfast volunteers, the event serves not only to bring young people together for the tournament, but it also brings many of the local businesses, schools, churches and community groups together from across East Belfast. “This event is about people coming together to do positive things for the benefit of the younger generation, it’s one that the entire community looks forward to, we have developed great partnerships with many different organisations and individuals.”
Due to demand, year three sees the introduction of an intermediate section and with support from the local East Belfast community and Belfast City Council, N.I Housing Executive, the IFA and Glentoran Trust, McDonalds Connswater 2011 is sure to be another successful tournament, that everyone involved can be proud of.
The George Best Community Cup takes place on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th July 2011, with the Final matches taking place in the Oval. For more information please go to:
