News from Thurles Education Centre
This month saw our students visiting some of Thurles’ cultural attractions. They visited an exhibition by Tipperary based Artist, Thomas Barron, in The Source Arts Centre entitled “Coming Home”. The exhibition comprised of large scale, expressive, abstract paintings which generated a lot of discussion from the students.
They also visited a display of sculptural works by Holycross based Artist Philip Quinn which are mounted on a wall beside Thurles Credit Union. Philip worked with community groups in Tipperary to make a series of pieces that reflected the various beliefs and cultures inherent in the communities. Thurles Education Centre were given the unique opportunity to work with Philip which resulted in him creating a metal disc inscribed with words from the Traveller language; Cant.
As part of their CSPE Junior Certificate programme Martin Taylor visited the students to discuss the Chernobyl project in Thurles. The project brings children from Chernobyl to stay with host families in Ireland each summer. The students were inspired by the project and the good work that was being done through it.
Our students successfully completed their Junior Certificate mock exams which took place In The Source Arts Centre community space. The positive results have given our students a lot of confidence for their final exams.
It is becoming a tradition for us to do something for charity for St Patricks day each year. This year we made shamrock badges which we sold to the local community. This year we raised E100.00 for Suir Havan, cancer support centre in Thurles.
