A Year in the Red

On Friday night November 26 at the Damer Court Hotel, Roscrea Hurling Club launched the seventh edition of “A Year in the Red”’. Running to twenty A4 size pages, the review newsletter was produced by a five man committee and is a tremendous record of the club’s activities during 2010 from the under 6s to senior level. The contents include an address by the Chairman, Kevin Brady, who captained the club to victory in the 1980 County Senior Final and a review of the season’s activities, by the Secretary, Proinnsias Loughnane. The upgrading work on the club pavilion is also detailed and was one of the most satisfactory achievements of the season. Six former primary school teachers are honoured in verse and they or their families received special presentations at the launch. Schools activity is also covered as are the Sean Gael awards and Seamus Doran’s  latest Tipperary song success (“Were you there?”). Camogie and Inane Rovers (celebrating their Diamond Jubilee) are also featured. There is an extensive article about John Dillon in the ”Red heroes of the past ” series. John captained the Senior team to its first ever county title in 1968 and won all of the under age honours with the club. He also played for Tipp at various grades and won an All Ireland Senior Medal in 1965. The nostalgia page is based on the club’s success in 1980.The photographs, including two with Dermot Earley (RIP), will rekindle many memories. Deceased club members, including the former President, Christy Maher, are remembered fondly in the Obituary section. Liberally served by black and white (51) and colour (18) photographs, with four all colour pages, the publication is supported by page sponsors, which ensured that the newsletter could be sold for only Euro 4, which is tremendous value.  Congratulations to this progressive club, which previously published “A Selected Club History” (1980) and “The Red Years” (1984). The Editorial committee is- Seamus Doran, Tom Mc Carthy, Sean Hogan, Joe Moloughney and Club PRO, Brian King. Copies may be ordered from Seamus Doran at 087 900 9820.
