Cloughjordan Drama Group present Many Happy Returns

Cloughjordan Drama Group will present Many Happy Returns, a festive comedy written by Bernard Farrell, for six nights in January. Come and join us for a highly entertaining and energetic comedy. The play is being staged in the Parochial Hall, Cloughjordan at 8.00pm on Friday January 17th, Saturday 18th, Sunday 19th, Wednesday 22nd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th.

It’s Christmas Eve and preparations are underway as Arthur (Nigel Quinlan) and Irene (Laura Williams) await a visit from their old friends. The ultra-organised Irene is determined to get Arthur back on his feet after a job setback by winning favour with Declan (Keith Armitage) and his flirtatious wife Amanda (Tricia Cleary), who are enjoying massive success in New Zealand. The brash self-made millionaire Declan is home for Christmas and pays a visit to Arthur, his former tutor who helped put him on the road to success. Irene believes Declan will now return the favour, despite Arthur’s scepticism. Irene’s father Matty (Bawney Hayes), whose stinginess drove his wife Gladys (June Williams) from home the previous year, has other plans however as the couple’s hopes for the future threaten to leave him on his own and his penchant for eavesdropping presents the opportunity to sabotage their plans. Much to Arthur’s dismay, Irene pulls out all the stops to impress the Declan and Amanda and Arthur reluctantly plays his part in the charade. Before long, misunderstandings and unexpected hitches place him in humiliatingly awkward situations. Despite Arthur and Irene’s best efforts to impress, everything that can go wrong does go wrong as family secrets and ghosts of the past rear their ugly heads. Many Happy Returns is one of Farrell’s funniest offerings which will have audiences in knots of laughter. In typical Farrell style, much is happening beneath the surface and plenty of hilarious surprises await the audience.

This year the group introduce Tricia Cleary to the boards – after several years spent backstage, Tricia will delight audiences with her portrayal of ditsy Feng Shui expert Amanda, who may not be all that she first appears. This year also sees the welcome return of June Williams to the stage – June will play the role of jet-setting Gladys, Matty’s estranged wife. Phil Quigley of Borrisokane has taken over the reins as director of the group this year and her flair for the comical will not disappoint.

A booking system is in place this year, anyone wishing to reserve seats for any of the performances is advised to phone 087 3332905 – this guarantees that seats will be held for you until 7.45pm on your chosen night. Curtains up at 8.00pm sharp each night. People are reminded that Living Links and Suaimhneas, two very deserving local charities, will benefit from the proceeds of the opening night on Friday January 17th so join us then if you are up for plenty of laughs while supporting a worthy cause.
