Hairy Tulip competition in aid of Nenagh Rape Crisis Centre and Rape Crisis Midwest

Nenagh Rape Crisis Centre and Rape Crisis Midwest are proud to be associated with the Tipperary Rose Centre and its current Tipperary Rose Lisa Hickey, for the upcoming year. This partnership will see the Tipperary Rose helping to raise awareness of the endeavours of the organisation and its many roles in the community.

When asked why the Portroe woman chose Rape Crisis Midwest as her main charity for the year Lisa explains that ‘becoming the Tipperary Rose has offered me an excellent opportunity to become more involved with many different charities and help to promote their efforts in the community. The Rape Crisis Centre is an outstanding organisation that not only offers counselling to survivors of sexual assault, but also trains volunteer counsellors and provides information courses to secondary school students on how to keep-safe. Given the subject matter of the charity it is typically an organisation that operates under the radar and I hope to make people aware of all the positives of this charity and also the wide range of services it has on offer’.  The Tipperary Rose also stressed that continued support from the community is necessary in order to ensure the day to day running of the centre and hopes that people will support their fundraising events over the coming months.

Rape Crisis Midwest was founded in 1980 and is a member of the Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI), the national representative body for Rape Crisis Centres in Ireland.  The Midwest branch has their head office in Limerick, with part-time outreach offices in Nenagh and Ennis. Rape Crisis Centres provides support, information and counselling services to both male and female survivors or rape and sexual assault. In addition to these supports, the centres also provide a range of other services including Garda and Court Accompaniment, training and educational programmes and SATU (Sexual Assault Treatment Unit) Support Workers.

Lisa’s role with the organisation will see her act as a judge in ‘The Hairy Tulip’ charity pageant competition which will be held in the Abbey Court on the 30th of June. This is no ordinary pageant and involves a very different type of ‘beauty’ – more information on this very special fundraiser will follow soon.
