Nenagh, Ireland’s Second Dirtiest Town!
A study, carried out by An Taisce for Irish Business Against Litter, has found that there has been further improvement in the cleanliness of Irish towns, with nearly three-quarters of the 53 towns surveyed now said to be as clean as the European norms. Carlow was announced tidiest town at a ceremony in Dublin on Monday. Here in Tipperary, Nenagh, which is the political capital of North Tipperary, was ranked Ireland’s second dirtiest town in the 53 towns surveyed (up only one place from the 2009 survey), followed by Portlaoise in Co.Laois. Carlow was presented with a plaque by Dr Tom Cavanagh, chairman of IBAL, he criticised the government, local and urban district county councils for failing to fully tackle the issue of litter, which shows slow signs of reducing. Dr Tom Cavanagh said Town Managers and Councillors should be going out to see what is going on throughout towns as regards littering. IBAL now wants people to take photographs of litter black spots in their areas and send the pictures to them, so that they can then send them on to the relevant local authorities.
