One-in-a-row
one-in-a-row
three cheers for Liam Sheedy
from dear old Portroe
from cashel to Newport
…wherever you go
the song you keep hearing
is one in a row

the famine is over
as Stakelum once said
poor oul Brian Cody
we wrecked his poor head
he drove for five
but the Tipp lads said no
Tipp have arrived
with one in a row

the great man king Henry
is certainly miffed
cause he’ll never be
Henry the fifth
good on you Lar Corbett
jolly good show
three cheers for Tipp-rary
one in a row

the great Brendan Cummins
got the job done
his mighty puck-outs
drove us to one
unlike Donal Og
he’s so hard to pass
cause he’s not lookin out
for the full
forwards ass

one in a row
one in a row
in 12 months time we’ll
give two a go
hats off to EoinKelly
and the great Benny Dunne
when his point went over
he drove us to one

On Sunday, 19 September, Blas an Fhomhair makes a welcome return to Kenyon Street, Nenagh. In keeping with the tradition, our guest chef this year again is Hugo Arnold, well known writer and journalist with the Irish Times.

Blas an Fhomhair is a celebration of local organic foods for National Organic Week. Speaking about this event, local businessman Peter Ward said “It is an ideal opportunity to remind people how accessible and affordable local organic food can be.” Ward stated that the event is an important opportunity to demonstrate local community spirit. The event has attracted in the region of 400 guests to Kenyon Street in the past.

This year’s theme is free range organic pork. Two pigs have been specially reared for the event. The rare breed pigs will be killed and processed by TJ Crowe at Dundrum. TJ will be assisted by some famous Italian butchers from the Malagato Slow Food Presidia in Tuscany. This Italian Falaschi family have been invited by Tipperary Slow Food to give us an insight into Italian organic pig processing. TJ and his team will be assisted by Jack McCarthy of Kanturk and Nora Egan of Inch House, both award winning black pudding makers.

On Sunday local businesses have agreed to help prepare the food. The Pantry Cafe will do their well known organic vegetables. The Abbey Court will also assist with the vegetables. Brocka on the Water will do all of the starters, with bread provided by Larkins of Garrykennedy and salad leaves from Sunny Meadow Organics in Portumna. Nenagh’s Country Market will do the homemade desserts, along with Nenagh Farmers Market. The Cloughjordan Community Farm and Cloughjordan Cookery School will also participate. Mossfield Organic Cheese will feature in the meal also.

Well known local archaeologist Caimin O’Brien will lead a food history tour of Nenagh with the Ormond Historical Society. The tour will leave Teach an Leinn at 2:00. Caimin has a special interest in the food history of Nenagh and will provide some useful information on the glorious food history of the town.

The event is an all weather event with cover provided. Patrons are advised to dress for the occasion. Nenagh Ormond Brass Band will be special guests this year. Tickets for a full meal are €15 per person and €40 for 2 adults and 2 children under 12. Lunch will be served around 4:00.

The sponsors this year are Bord Bia, Shannon Development, Nenagh Chamber of Commerce, The Ormond Hotel, The Pantry, The Abbey Court and Country Choice. Tickets are available at The Pantry, Nadur and Country Choice.

Organic Pig Preparation Workshop - Saturday 18 September 3:30

As part of the successful Blas an Fhomhair Harvest festival celebrating National Organic Week, Tipperary Slow Food have organised a meet, greet and observe pig preparation workshop at the Crowe farm in Dundrum, South Tipperary.

Visitors will have a chance to meet some well known Italian master butchers from the Falaschi family from Tuscany. Sergio Falaschi will share his expertise in preparing the local organic pig Italian style and host butcher TJ Crowe will share his information on his unique butchering style. Nora Egan of Inch House Black Pudding and Jack McCarthy of Kanturk will make some of their famous puddings. All of the meat will be cooked at the Country Choice kitchens in Nenagh for the Blas an Fhomhair harvest lunch on Sunday the 19th. Hugo Arnold of the Irish Times will lead a team of chefs including Maurice Keller and Enda Cooneely. The cost of the workshop will be €20 per adult, not suitable for children – contact TJ Crowe for more details.

South Tipperary T.D. Tom Hayes has organised a Jobs Fair in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary to provide people in the town with information about the training and supports available to them, as well as providing help with CV preparation, career direction and financial advice.

“The Jobs Fair will take place in the Carraig Hotel in Carrick-on-Suir on Wednesday 15th September, from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. There will be an opportunity for people to speak one-on-one with representatives from South Tipperary County Enterprise Board, CV/Career Advice , FAS, Mortgage Advisor, South Tipperary Development Company, South Tipperary VEC , Tipperary Institute, UL, WIT. There will also be CV/Career advice and mortgage advice available to people on the night.”

“The aim of the Jobs Fair is to provide people with the information they need to cope with unemployment - like the mortgage advice, information from the Department of Social Protection, etc. - while also giving information about further training and education, and the skills for career progression. It can be very difficult for people to know how best to train themselves after being recently made redundant, or after a longer period of unemployment. The Jobs Fair will help to provide people with options so that they can start a small business, or re-train, or update their CV to get another job.”

“Carrick-on-Suir has 2,225 people unemployed and people in the town are doing everything they can to promote the town and build it back up. The business people in the town have shown that they are working for the town and this is an opportunity to help people in the town who have lost their jobs back on their feet, and ready for the changing economic situation we face. I would encourage all people looking for work, and all employers to attend this Jobs Fair, as a way to network, create opportunities and learn more about the possibilities available.

Tipperary was very well represented in almost every event at the recent National Finals which were hosted by Athlone Institute of Technology. The outstanding individual performance of the games was by local girl Mairead Teehan from St. Flannan’s. Mairead is no stranger to the National Finals, having competed previously in the Cross Country, Relay’s, Model-Making and the Project. In Mairead’s own understated way she saved the best till last when she took her final puck to win the National Title and Gold Medal. She was watched from the sidelines by her proud family, with mother Una shedding tears when Mairead was presented with her gold medal. County Chairman and local St. Flannan’s coach Seamus Hogan was delighted with her success. Another great win for Tipperary came from young Anthony Tobin of St. Peter’s & Paul’s in the very difficult and technical discipline of the Under 13 Walk. Anthony showed fantastic concentration to win his semi-final and to go on and take gold in the Final. He displayed true grit to come back and win this year’s National Finals as he had been disqualified in the same race last year. In the team events Cahir Camogie Team had to battle hard to win a classic match against Lucan Sarsfield’s of Dublin to bring the Gold Medals back to Tipperary. Former County Chairman Martin O’Keeffe expressed his delight with the girls win.

Lara O’Dwyer of Tipperary Town had a good outing also to take 2nd place in the U12 Ball Throw. Toomevara came a cropper against a very strong and experienced Kilkenny Team to bring Silver home. Cloughjordan javelin thrower Caroline Morgan put together a fantastic series of throws to take Bronze in her event. Ballingarry went home with 2 Bronze medals when Darren Prout came 3rd in the U14 Hurdles and Lorraine O’Shea in the U16 100m. Moycarkey/Borris also took Bronze when Anthony McElvey finished 3rd in the Boys Long Puck competition.

Ballina Boys U14 4×100m relay team of Jack Brady, James Murtagh, Bill Floyd and Jamie Collins won their heat, came 3rd in their semi-final and placed 4th to claim the new pewter medals. Eimear Ryan from St. Flannan’s threw 8.40m to finish in 5th place in the Shot Putt Finals, Eimear missed out of the pewter medal by 4cms. Eoin Ryan from Newport came 9th in the U16 Boys Discus championship while Tom Hennessey of Ballinahinch/Killoscully was very unlucky to finish outside the medals in the Boys U16 High Jump.

The Ryan family from Moycarkey/Borris was well represented with Anna in the Under 8 80m, Jack in the Under 10 100m, David in the Under 12 4×100m relay along with Daniel who was in not only the same relay but the Under 12 100m also. Anna is not just a superb sprinter; she is also the TTHSE Community Games Under 8 Art winner. Templemore had their first athlete in the National Finals for a long time this year in Robert Kennedy who gave a good account of himself in the Boys Under 12 600m.

Mick England from Roscrea Co-Ordinated the Shot Putt, Discus and Javelin competition with Claire Hogan from St. Flannan’s recording and All-Ireland champion Sean Tobin (older brother of Gold Medal winner Anthony) taking measurements in the same event. Tipperary had total of 12 National Officials working hard at the Finals this year. The County Manager Joan Hogan from St. Flannan’s ran a logistically sound ship and was ably assisted by her second in command Mary Moroney-Cullagh from Silvermines. In fact Mary was so efficient she was called into action to Umpire at the Hurling Finals. Liam Tierney from Cloughjordan did Trojan work in his capacity as Athletics Manager and provided great support to all the athletes involved. Emby Walsh from Carrick on Suir was also very busy up on the track. Our thanks to all the parents, coaches, families and supporters for travelling to Athlone to support the Athletes, Camogie players and Hurlers at the weekend.

Dates for your Diary:

County AGM is being held in Hayes Hotel, Thurles on Wednesday 29th September. Please return all nomination of County Secretary K.

Astronomy Ireland have recieved hundres of calls following reports on the crash-landing off a Meteroite worth 20 times its weight in gold. From these calls Astronomy Ireland have been able to deduct that the Meteroite landed in and around the county of Tipperary.

They are appealing for reports from the people of Tippeary to come forward in the event that they may have seen a very bright fireball streak accoss the sky on Wednesday evening 1st September at around 9.20pm. The rock may could be worth up to one million euro, but so far so no cash awards are being offered for its find …

Of course, they will not be expecting any calls to its office on Sunday 5th September when the people of Tipperary will be otherwise engaged with other important matters demanding their attention.
