James (Jimmy) Maher of The Orchard, RIP

Devilsbit Macra na Feirme would like to acknowledge the recent death of a prominent member of Macra na Feirme, Jimmy Maher of The Orchard, Shankakill and wish to extend our condolences to his wife Margaret, his son Tim, his daughter Catherine and members of the extended Maher family.

Jimmy Maher was one of the founding members of Clonmore Macra na Feirme in 1969. In 1970 he was elected as club Chairman. During his tenure as Chairman, the club won County Club of the Year and organised numerous field days and events. Jimmy instilled a love of Macra in his son and daughter, Tim and Catherine. Tim and Catherine are longstanding and prominent Macra members who have both carried on the Macra tradition in roles such as Chairperson of Devilsbit Macra na Feirme and Chairperson of North Tipperary Macra na Feirme.

The Macra na Ferime Guard of Honour at Jimmy’s funeral is a testament to the regard Jimmy and his family are held in within Macra na Feirme.

Macra’s Toughest Club

On Saturday 29th April, Devilsbit Macra na Feirme proudly hosted the first ever “Macra’s Toughest Club”. Macra teams from Callan, Fermoy, Mitchelstown, Nenagh, Newport, Ferbane/Banagher, SlieveBloom, Kilkenny City, North Kilkenny, Ennis, Six-Mile Bridge, Kilmurry, Rathangan, Naas, Hill 16, Enfield, Royal Rally, Rathdowney, Slievenamon and Kilmacthomas travelled to Roscrea Rugby Club to compete on the day. Over the course of the day the teams participated in various activities such as a 1km run, hale bale toss, a tyre tug, hale bale roll, a tractor pull and sheep herding.  This was followed by a Banquet reception in Racket Hall County Club Roscrea with music provided by Michael Hutchinson and The Waxies. This party was attended by over 140 Macra members. Well done to Callan Macra who came first, Fermoy who came second and Mitchelstown who came third. Devilsbit Macra would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped make the event a success.

Farm Skills Competition

On Sunday 14th May, Devilsbit Macra hosted the county round of Farm Skills competition in club member, Joe Maher’s farm. Sincere thanks to Joe. A great day was had by all with club members being tested on their tractor driving skills, farming knowledge, fencing and gate hanging skills. Well done to Edward Roe, Caoimhe Egan and Eamonn Joyce who will represent club and county in the next round of the competition at this year’s Rathdowney Show. We wish them the very best of luck.

Blue Jeans Country Queen Festival

The Blue Jean Country Queen Festival will take place Friday 2nd – Monday 5th June in Athboy, Co.Meath. Contestants from Macra clubs all over the country will come together to compete for the title of Blue Jean Country Queen 2017. This year, we are thrilled to announce that the North Tipperary Blue Jeans Country Queen representative is Miriam Crone. Miriam is a fabulous candidate and we look forward to supporting her in Athboy. Well done, Miriam.

Bake Sale for ISPCC in McCauley Centre on 21st May

Our North Tipperary Blue Jeans Queen, Miriam Crone, will be hosting a Bake Sale in aid of the ISPCC in the McCauley Centre, Templemore on Sunday 21st May. Delicious cakes and treats will be available after Sunday Masses. All support for this worthy cause is greatly appreciated.

Devilsbit Tag Rugby

Devilsbit are extremely busy training for the Macra Tag Rugby Competition. Practise continues to take place every Monday and Wednesday in Clonmore GAA field. There has been a great turn out so far and practises have been great fun. All are more than welcome.

Tipperary Rose Selection 2017

Well done to Lisa Meade, Clonmore, who participated in the 2017 Tipperary Rose Selection held in the Anner Hotel Thurles. Lisa, along with twenty other contestants on the night,  took to the stage and represented us all with distinction. Well done Lisa and the very best of luck to Sheila Ryan, the 2017 Tipperary Rose.

Devilsbit AGM 21st May 2017

The annual AGM of Devilsbit Macra na Feirme will take place in Clonmore Hall on Wednesday 21st May 2017. We will elect a new committee for coming Macra year so we hope to see as many members there as possible.
