Confidence Is Growing That Vera Twomey’s Journey Will End In Success – Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has indicated that the campaign of Cork mother, Vera Twomey, is set to receive a significant political boost in the coming days. Deputy McGrath who is a member of the Rural Independent Group was speaking after his Group colleague, Dr Michael Harty, who is also Chairman of the Oireachtas Health Committee, confirmed that representatives from the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) have been invited to appear before the Committeenext Tuesday, almost five weeks ahead of their scheduled appearance in April:

“Last Wednesday the Rural Independent Group convened an emergency meeting to consider how we could respond to the dreadful human predicament that Vera and her daughter Ava and family are currently enduring.

In particular, Deputy Harty and Deputy Michael Collins spoke passionately about the need to respond in as swift and as responsible a manner as possible.

Dr Harty clearly outlined the medical reality as well as what was required to effectively realise the safest possible clinical outcome for young Ava.

Deputy Collins urged all of all us to rise and meet the challenges presented before us by the suffering that so many people are experiencing and who are placing their hope in the licensing of a medically safe extract of the cannabis plant.

To that end, as I understand it, the HPRA’s appearance before the Oireachtas Health Committee will likely lead to a strong recommendation being made to the appropriate dispensing  authorities requiring them to consider the specific medical circumstances of this individual case.

All of us are anxious to see Vera’s heroic work on her daughters behalf brought to a successful conclusion.

However, we must at the same time avoid allowing our obvious human sympathy to bypass the need to perform robust, clinically responsible legislative due diligence.

That being said, the priority which members like Dr Harty and Deputy Collins have given to this issue demonstrates that we are extremely close to realising the best possible outcome for Vera and her daughter,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
