Government commitment to Post Office Network is about to be tested – McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has said that the Rural Independents Group will be using its Private Members time on Wednesday next to table a Motion on the future of the Post Office Network. Deputy McGrath went on to say that the Motion will be an opportunity for Government to definitively commit to the revitalisation and growth of the Network which is currently under serious threat of collapse:
“Every member of our Group has serious concerns for the future of the Post Office Network.
We are seeking an absolute commitment to a range of measures that we believe will sustain and grow our Post Offices, particularly those in rural areas which are struggling to survive.
That struggle is in large part due to the reluctance of government to implement areas of potential growth like those identified in the 2013 Oireachtas Joint Committee On Transport and Communications Report.
That Report, as well as the 2012 Grant Thornton review of 2012, identified key ways of promoting a sustainable future for the Post Office Network.
We need to see immediate action on these measures.
We also need Government to wake up to the devastating social consequences that will materialise if a commitment to innovative solutions continues to be absent from this debate.
Our Motion will be a very real opportunity for the Government to demonstrate whether its commitment to the institutions of rural Ireland is anything more than lip service,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
