Five new Gardaí finally assigned to Clonmel Station – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has welcomed confirmation that Clonmel Garda station is set to receive five newly attested gardaí. Deputy McGrath went on to describe the move as an initial step toward honouring a long standing commitment to reinforce the number of Gardaí in the Tipperary Division.

“In February we were told that no new recruits had been allocated to Co. Tipperary despite Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow all receiving an additional five recruits each in the latest round of postings.

Since then I have made several attempts to impress upon the Commissioner and the Minister for Justice the totally unacceptable nature of that situation.

In light of that I am delighted to have had it confirmed that Clonmel Garda Station, which is one of the most significantly overstretched stations in any Garda Division, is set to receive five new members.

This is not sufficient by any means but at least it is a step in the right direction given Clonmel’s chronic under-capacity in terms of existing Garda numbers.

It is even more important in the context of up to 20 serving Tipperary Division members reaching eligibility for retirement this year.

I have every intention of maintaining the political and public pressure on this matter given how badly Tipperary has been served in the last number of allocations.

Accepting an inadequate and overstretched policing presence within the county is simply not an option for the public or the members of An Garda Siochana,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
