Tipp County Council’s Work On Ardfinnan Bridge At Odds With Minister’s Reply – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on Tipperary County Council to immediately clarify the priority it has given to addressing the urgent need for remedial and repair work on Ardfinnan Bridge. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the Minister for Transport Shane Ross indicated in parliamentary reply to him that the Ardfinnan Bridge ‘was placed some way down the list in Tipperary County Councils application’:

“There is a clear disconnect here between the apparent urgency that the Council says is characterising its efforts around Ardfinnan Bridge and the reply of the Minister who says they seem to have knocked it back to low level priority.

If Tipperary County Council did not adequately make the case for immediate repair works under the Department’s Bridge Rehabilitation Grant scheme then we need to know why.

The damage to the bridge and the obvious frustrations it is causing at a local level clearly indicated the need for a more urgent funding application.

I accept that a grant allocation of €60,000 was made in respect of Ardfinnan Bridge with a view to facilitating progress on initial remedial works, but this is clearly insufficient.

Again, we need to know from the Council if that amount of funding was allocated on the basis of a ‘low priority’ application.

I have requested similar clarifications from the Minister who I hope to question during the Adjournment Debates scheduled for today’s sitting of the Dáil,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
