BrianBourke@Source29May (48 of 109)In addition to presenting a high quality touring programme of the best on offer across art form on the Irish circuit and internationally where possible, we place a high value on community participation and engagement with our venue. We aim to be the centre where audience and artists collide, interact, inform, enrich and present. With a focus on theatre, families, music, film and dance, in addition to a superb visual arts space, we aim to find new and lasting collaborative approaches with the local professional and amateur artistic community. We aim to create an arts infrastructure which supports and mentors professional artists working in the locality, as resources permit.

The Source Arts Centre would like to work with a Visual Art Curator to apply for funding under the Arts Council Visual Art Curatorial Award. The award opens on 12th August and closes on 11th September 2014. As time is so tight we are now looking for outline proposals from Curators who may be interested in working with The Source to put together a funding application to the Arts Council this September. If the award is similar to that of previous years the funding goes directly to the Curator to work with the arts centre/gallery, has a maximum value of €20,000 and applies to the calendar year 2015. If the joint application is not successful The Source Arts Centre will not be in a position to engage the Curator.

It is intended to apply for funding to achieve the following broad goals:

  • Curate an exhibition(s) for The Source Arts Centre in 2015
  • Potential to examine alternative spaces to run alongside the exhibition at The Source Arts Centre
  • Potential to support the commissioning of new work (funding dependant)
  • Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage the public (particularly local schools) through the visual arts
  • Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage with local artists and artist groups through the visual arts
  • Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage with other arts venues in the county through the visual arts

The aims of the Curatorial Award would be to:

·         Engage imaginatively with the public and local communities to encourage engagement with and a sense of ownership of the gallery at The Source Arts Centre

·         Examine the opportunities available to create and present contemporary visual art in
non-dedicated arts spaces

·         Develop through good critical writing, a local, national and international audience for contemporary visual arts in Thurles and surrounding area

The brief is intended to be open to the interpretation, and individual response of the Curator. These goals identify some parameters on which the Curator can base a response.  It is recognised that at this application stage the Curator would not be in a position to articulate fully what may arise during the period of the Award.  The Source Arts Centre is open to negotiation in relation to possible exhibition or other visual interventions in the public sphere to take place at the suggestion of the Curator. Work in the exhibition(s) can potentially include individual artists, collections, or works from visual artist’s collectives.
