Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football Notes

Tesco Homegrown Divisional 3 National League Round 2

Longford       0-12         Tipperary      0-9

Tipperary made an early start for their long trip to Longford in round 2 of the league. These two teams have met on a number of occasions over the past few years, with Longford in pole position by virtue of their eight point win last year in the Intermediate championship. Conditions were windy and wet which did not help as the playing surface was very heavy and sticky. The Midlanders had first use of a stiff wind in the first half. Both teams went at it hammer and tongs from the throw in and both sets of backs were in no mood for conceding scores. Helen Kennedy in the Tipp goal kept a clean sheet after been troubled by the Longford forwards on a number of occasions. By half time Longford had 0-9 on the score board and Tipperary registered 0-5 after missing a number of goal chances. Tipp scores came from Patricia Hickey 0-3 (frees), Shauna Ryan 0-1 and Orlagh Walsh 0-1. The second half was more of the same with scores hard to come by but points from Edith Carroll, Jennifer Grant and Orlagh Walsh made it a one point game. Longford with two extra players back in defence closed out any chance of Tipp taking the lead. Kelly Hackett making her first appearance of the year added strength to the forward line and kicked a fine point from play. Longford finished stronger by adding two late points to seal out the game. Both teams are to be complimented for a spirited but sporting game of football played in very difficult conditions. On another day Tipperary might have got the bit of luck that would have won this game. The team management of Sean O’Donovan, Derry Peters, Una O Brien, Kay Lyons and Elaine Powell were happy with the effort and team work of all the players on the day.
Team Helen Kennedy, Brid Condon, Samantha Lambert, Sinead Delahunty, Ann O’Dwyer, Claire Carroll, Barbara Ryan, Jennifer Grant, Aoife Ryan, Ashling McCarthy, Sheelagh Carew, Orlagh Walsh, Shauna Ryan, Patricia Hickey and Edith Carroll. Subs used Siobhan Condon, Jayne Clancy and Kelly Hackett. Scores Patricia Hickey 0-3, Orlagh Walsh 0-2, Shauna Ryan 0-1, Edith Carroll 0-1, Jennifer Grant 0-1 and Kelly Hackett 0-1. Next game Tipperary take on Leitrim at 2 o’clock in a home venue for Tipperary.
