South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath gives support to family under threat of eviction

South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath today visited Appletown Farm in Co. Limerick to give his support to a family facing eviction. Debt campaigner Seamus Sherlock and his family have barricaded themselves into the farm for the past 150 days after receiving an eviction notice.  Seamus Sherlock famously chained himself to ESB headquarters a number of years ago after they refused to accept €50 a week and threatened to cut him off. This action forced the ESB to reconnect homes that had been cut off and allowed for an installment plan to be put in place to help people in arrears pay off their bill.

After that incident Seamus set up a group ‘Life after Debt’ offering free advice and assistance to people struggling with debt. Since receiving the eviction notice in August, Seamus has been inundated with offers of support and volunteers from organisations such as the Anti Eviction Taskforce are providing round the clock surveillance watching out for the arrival of the Sheriff.

Mattie McGrath made the news last December when he and five others occupied the headquarters of Friends First financial company following the attempted repossession of a tractor from a farm in Co. Wexford. He joins two other TDs who have visited the farm in support, Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan and Tom Fleming.

Below is a video of Mattie speaking at the farm today.
