Conor Delaney crowned Miss Hairy Tulip

The Hairy Tulip reached its finale last Saturday night with local Solicitor, Conor Delaney (aka Connie Della Haney) being crowned Miss Hairy Tulip, staying in character and even shedding a tear of joy when presented with her crown and bouquet of tulips.  Connie Della Haney’s told local MC Martin Langton that her father was Italian and her mother was originally from Silvermines – whilst on holidays back in 2066 ‘tracing her roots’ in Silvermines, she fell in love with the area and never went home. Her party piece impressed not only the Judges but the crowd as she managed to gargle a glass of water while singing ‘Slievenamon’ – most impressive.

3 further awards were presented and Tony Canning (aka Lady Gaga) was crowned Miss Congeniality, Bobby Reidy (aka Miss Ba Ba) taking the crown for Sexiest Legs and the  Best Act went to the even popular Johnny Cavanagh (Miss Cast Iron) for his wonderful rendition of ‘Save your love my darling, save your love’

The capacity crowd began to pour in from 7pm onwards whilst the Tulips were still on their tour of the town parading and shaking hands with onlookers. They came back to the hotel for one final ‘touch up’ and the show began with a welcome message from Alan Kelly T.D and Miriam Duffy. The show didn’t disappoint many of the acts, including Paul O’Connell from Templederry ( aka Miss Horseslips) who was first on stage gave the MC a run for his money. Despite the nerves being first on stage, he presented Martin Langton with a step to stand on and told the crowd ‘he didn’t like to look down on men!!’ All the acts were escorted on stage by Virginia O’Dowd and Melissa Moroney who again, kept in character and dressed in tuxedo for the evening. The Judges, including Lisa Hickey and Marion Murphy Cooney had a really difficult task for the evening but arrived at a decision independently after deliberating.

The real winner was the Rape Crisis Centre in Nenagh which will benefit to a huge extent from the funds raised from this event. Lalor McGee (aka Miss Crystalina) spoke on behalf of the committee towards the end of the evening and said that a presentation will be made in a few weeks as to the amount raised.  In addition to raising  awareness for Rape Crisis Midwest in a good natured way, this pageant also hopes to challenge the stereotype that Rape Crisis Centres are just for women.  Rape Crisis Midwest provides free, professional counselling for male and female survivors of all forms of sexual abuse. It relies heavily on the generosity of the public to keep the centre open.
