Ewe celebrating St Patrick’s Day? Even a flock of sheep in Scotland wants to be ‘seen in green’ this weekend!

As the world gears up for St Patrick’s Day, a flock of woolly ambassadors in West Lothian in Scotland has turned green to join in the celebrations.

And, in another coup for Irish tourism, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco will join the Irish Ambassador to France and Monaco, Paul Kavanagh, on Saturday evening to ‘green’ the façade of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco in honour of St Patrick. This Saturday also sees the Sydney Opera House take on a green hue once again.

This ‘greening’ activity is part of a global initiative by Tourism Ireland which will see the London Eye, Selfridges in London, Niagara Falls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Burj al Arab in Dubai and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai, as well as a host of other landmarks and sites around the globe, turn a shade of green this weekend.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us and we’re delighted to be continuing our ‘greening’ initiative again this year, with lots of new additions such as the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Selfridges in London, Niagara Falls and even a flock of Scottish sheep. Our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people around the world, while also showcasing our wonderful tourism offering to a huge global audience. Our message is that there has never been a better time to ‘Jump In’ and plan a visit to Ireland.”

Saturday also sees the final round of the Six Nations rugby tournament – including the small matter of the clash between Ireland and England at Twickenham. Millions of people in Britain and elsewhere around Europe will be tuning in to watch the match and Tourism Ireland’s highly visible sideline advertising will capitalise on the tourism potential for Ireland from the huge exposure of this high profile game.
