Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football Notes

Bord Gais Energy Div. 2 Round 3
Tipperary 4-12 Fermanagh 2-10
Tipperary Ladies Gaelic footballers put their first set of points on the board in sun drenched Templemore on Sunday last with a convincing winner over Fermanagh. Tipperary were first on the score board with a point from Gillian O Brien and a pointed free from Aine Staunton. Fermanagh responded with two close in frees  and the game was evenly balanced until Sheelagh Carew playing at Centre Forward scored a great goal with a pile driver of a shot.

Tipperary went into a 1-7 to 0-4 lead midway through the first half and were in cruise control. However Tipperary’s backs took their eyes of the ball and were guilty of some very basic mistakes. The score at half time was 1-7 a piece but Tipperary can thank their goal keeper Helen Kennedy for keeping them in the game with some top class saves.
Tipperary’s management made some astute changes at half time which paid rich dividend in the second half. Niamh Lonergan replaced Shauna Maher at corner back Kelly Hackett came in at corner forward with Sheelagh Carew moving to wing back in place of her club mate Mary O Dwyer. Katie Lyne move into centre half back to mark Fermanagh’s danger woman Caroline Little and did a magnificent job holding her scoreless for the remainder of the game. Fermanagh were quickest out of the blocks after the break firing in an early goal. This was a wakeup call for the Tipp girls and they responded well with a good goal from Aine Staunton. Tipperary backs were now on top of their game holding Fermanagh’s forwards to just three points for the remainder of the game. Centre field and our forwards took control of the game scoring 3-5 to Fermanagh’s 1-3 in the second half.
