Record Turnout at the Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country

The Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country Championships took place last week on Wednesday 28th September in Thurles Crokes Complex amid glorious sunshine. These Championships have been running for a number of years & continue to go from

strength to strength. This year a record number of over 2,100 children (up 300 from 2010) between the ages of 8 & 12 years from 70 different schools took part in over 20 different races. The races are divided up into two age categories for girls & boys,

3rd/4th Class & 5th/6th Class. Each age category is then further sub-divided into Major, Large, Medium, Small & Extra-Small Schools to make 20 races in total.

This event is organised entirely by the Tipperary Athletics County Board & its chief organiser is Emby Walsh, the Tipperary Athletics Track & Field Secretary. Our thanks to Emby for all the hours of work that she puts into the event & to all her helpers. Our thanks also to Thurles Crokes A.C. for hosting the event & to all who

helped out on the day. Thurles Crokes A.C. did a magnificent job in hosting these Championships & laid on every possible facility from the superb course complete with officials to car/bus parking, toilets, first aid & the provision of refreshments for the officials. The schools & teachers of the County are also to be commended for training their pupils & organising for them to attend on the day. Their support for the Championships is phenomenal & is a credit to our County. There are not many events in the whole country which attract as many juvenile athletes as this Tipperary event. In a time where the health of our children is of upmost importance, Tipperary is certainly stepping up to the mark to ensure we encourage a county of healthy, happy juveniles.
