Mary Clancy to Open Carrick-on-Suir Clancy Brothers Music and Arts Festival‏

The Clancy Brothers Music and Arts Festival 2011 will open on Thursday, June 2 with a variety evening hosted by Mary Clancy at The Brewery Lane Theatre “from Carnegie to Carrick with the Clancy Brothers” including a ‘Friends of Brewery Lane Variety Concert’.

Mary Clancy is the wife of the late Paddy Clancy. Commenting on her hosting of the Variety Concert Mary said, “I’m delighted to be part of this festival which honours the great talent of The Clancy Brothers, this is their hometown and their world wide success really is a deserving celebration.”

A host of theatre and Drama will feature alongside the extensive music programme of the festival as the historic Ormond Castle is taken over for the opening of the festival where Duked Productions will perform ‘The Colleen Bawn’ by Dion Boucicault on June 1 and 2 at 7pm.

The group performed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in Ormond Castle last year and were so warmly received they have decided to return this year for two nights.   “Carrick On Suir will be the first stop of a three week tour and the actors are excited about performing in Ormond Castle again.  We were made to feel very welcome last year and it meant alot to us” said company director Ailish Leavy.

The play is a funny and charming melodrama set in 18th Century Ireland: Landowner, Hardress Cregan, is deeply in debt and the only way he can save his estate is to marry the heiress Anne Chute but Hardress is already secretly married to the beautiful peasant girl, Eily O’Connor.  How far will Hardress and his loyal servant, Danny Mann, go to save his estate?  Tickets are on sale from the Heritage Centre in Carrick On Suir.

The best of Broadway will take place at The Strand Theatre with Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society on Friday at 8pm.

Some major international music acts will also feature on the 2011 festival programme including Paul Brady who will headline the Festival with a concert at The Strand Theatre on Sunday, June 5 in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary. Also featuring on the extensive music programme for ‘ROCK ON THE SUIR’ an outdoor concert with Mundy and Paddy Casey; a variety of music busking competitions, Concerts, Workshops, Drama, a Children’s Parade, Free Family Fun afternoons, Lunchtime Theatre, Sporting Events and an Art Trail for all ages and tastes all feature as part of the festival programme.

The Art Trail featuring over 100 artists, students and photographers commences on Friday, June 3 at venues throughout the town culminating in an exclusive exhibition ‘River Suir Inspired’ at Ormond Castle in Carrick-on-Suir; the trail and exhibition will run throughout the festival weekend until June 6.
