Tipperary GAA Scene

Tipperary completed their Allianz Hurling League campaign with a 0-17 each draw with Wexford on Sunday last at Semple Stadium. It was only the third draw in the 40 league meetings between the 2 counties. The draw secured Wexford’s position in Division 1 for next season and this gave rise to scenes of great jubilation among the Wexford players, mentors and supporters after the game. Tipperary’s next competitive game will be against Cork on May 29 in the Munster Championship quarter final at Semple Stadium. Tipperary used 35 players in total throughout the League campaign with Pa Bourke being the only player to feature for the full 70 minutes of all 7 games. Three other players, Benny Dunne, Gearoid Ryan and David Young featured were the only other players to feature in all 7 games. 10 players made their Allianz League debuts during this year’s campaign – Shane Bourke, Sean Carey, John Coghlan, Eddie Connolly, Paddy Fanning, Michael Gleeson, Paddy Murphy, John O’Keeffe, Brian O’Meara and John O’Neill.

Tipperary County Board is delighted to welcome car manufacturers, Skoda, as the new sponsor of the Tipperary county teams. Skoda have signed a 3 year sponsorship deal with the County Board and we believe it will be a mutually beneficial arrangement. The sponsorship was formally launched at Croke Park this week and included the unveiling of the new Tipperary jersey which will be worn by all Tipperary teams for the championship season. After enjoying almost 10 years of excellent sponsorship from Enfer, we expect to have an equally positive experience with Skoda over the next 3 years. We wish Skoda well and hope they will benefit from their association with Tipperary football and hurling teams.

Registration has opened for this year’s VHI GAA Cúl Camps in which over 80,000 children from all round the country are expected to participate this summer. The 2011 VHI GAA Cúl Camps were officially launched on Tuesday, April 12 by Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana, and Declan Moran of VHI Healthcare. With over 1,000 camps taking place in Ireland and overseas, and over 80,000 children aged 6 – 13 years participating, the VHI GAA Cúl Camps are the most popular children’s sporting camps in the country. This is the sixth year of the massively popular VHI GAA Cúl Camps and GAA heroes Dublin Hurling Manager Anthony Daly and Kildare Football Manager Kieran McGeeney were on-hand to launch the event in their official capacity as VHI GAA Cúl camps ambassadors. The ambassadors will travel around the summer camps visiting the participants and passing on valuable tips and advice. Now in its sixth year, the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps is a nationally co-ordinated programme which aims to encourage primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13, to develop sporting skills irrespective of their skill level or ability and also to develop a sense of sporting fair play and personal achievement by participating in various Gaelic games, in a fun, non competitive environment. This year the VHI and GAA decided to lower the age that children could register to six years old as the skills picked up in the camps including healthy living, exercise, a respect for others and a sense of fair play can be accessed and applied by the youngest members of our communities across the country. The 2011 camps are expected to be extremely popular with huge demand already coming through and parents are advised to book early to ensure they get a place at the camp of their choice. Online booking is now open at www.gaa.ie or www.vhiculcamps.gaa.ie.

Returning to TG4 for a second series this autumn, TV’s first ever GAA quiz show Ceist GAA has now begun its search for Irelands No1 GAA Quiz team. Presented by Hector Ó hEochagáin, Navan O’Mahony’s own red-haired GAA encyclopedia, the 15 part series will be recorded this summer and run from September to Christmas on TG4. Teams will face a tough test, battling through qualifiers, quarterfinals, semi-finals and onto the grand final. This is a quiz show that challenges and entertains. No matter what your level of knowledge of GAA history and trivia, you’ll find something here to tickle your fancy and provide Sunday evening entertainment for all the family.

This Irish language quiz will explore the odd, the remarkable, the unbelievable and the strange in the rich and varied history of the GAA.  It will show hilarious GAA archive, pitch invasions, amazing and acrobatic scores, breaking of crossbars and scraps of all kinds. Ceist GAA will have them all and more.  No show could have GAA in its name without having Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh – in his segment Ceist na Seachtaine he will test the nation’s knowledge on all sorts of GAA trivia. Are you the local GAA knowledge buff?  Has your club got a mastermind who will lead the team to claim the prize as GAA’s No 1 quiz champions? Recordings will take place in Ceannáras TG4 in Baile na hAbhann this coming June. To enter your club into the series, go to www.tg4.ie/ceistgaa.  Entries must reach TG4 by April 28.

The 2011-2012 draw was officially launched live on Tipp FM on Friday April 1 by County Board Chairman, Barry O Brien. There is over €500k in prize money this year with 2 Star prizes on offer in addition to 2 cars and many other prizes each month.  The first draw will take place on Friday, May 20 with a star prize of €30,000 to be won. Over the coming weeks receipts will be posted out to all existing members and people can either send the money directly to the GAA Office at Lar na Pairce, Thurles or to their Club promoter. The co-ordinator draw packs have been distributed to clubs and all Clubs are asked to put their usual big effort into promoting the draw.
