‘Kilenaule Robin’ to roost, Declan Fanning announces his retirement from inter-county hurling

Declan Fanning announces his retirement from inter-county hurling

Having had the great honour of winning an All Ireland senior hurling medal with Tipperary this year, I have decided to call time on my inter-county hurling career. It was a huge privilege for me to be a member of this great Tipperary hurling panel. I have never worked with a more committed management team or group of players. I am very grateful to Liam Sheedy and his management and backroom team for all the encouragement and support they gave me. I want to thank all the players. We worked hard together but we also had great fun and I shall miss training and hurling with them.  I also want to thank my club, Killenaule, for their great loyalty and support during my time playing with Tipperary. Playing inter-county hurling requires lots of sacrifices particularly from players’ families. I want to thank my wife, Lucy, and my family for their great support at all times. Finally, I want to wish Tipperary well for the future. I have no doubt this current group of players will go on to bring many more honours to the county.

Tipperary County Board statement on retirement of Declan Fanning

Tipperary County Board is very sorry to hear of Declan Fanning’s retirement from inter-county hurling. Declan served the county with great skill and commitment. His quiet and determined personality was hugely influential on Tipperary’s success this year and he is held in very high regard by his fellow players, by team management and all associated with Tipperary hurling. He epitomised all that is good in the GAA. He will be missed very much. We thank him for his dedicated service and wish him and his family well for the future.
