A new special breaks brochure promoting the tourism offering in Co. Tipperary was launched today (Monday, 11th October, 2010) by local B&B operators in the area.  The new brochure covering the Thurles/Holycross/Templemore area has been produced under the EU CANTATA 2 programme, a three year EU project being managed by Shannon Development the tourism and development authority for the Shannon Region.

Commenting on the new brochure, Bernie Leonard, Shannon Development Tourism Officer for North Tipperary said: “Shannon Development is delighted to be involved in this new tourism initiative which will help add to the attractiveness of the Thurles/Holycross/Templemore area as a holiday destination. The brochure highlights details of participating B&Bs and local attractions, with a strong emphasis on value for money holiday packages.”

Ms. Leonard added: “The aim of the CANTATA 2 project is to help B&B’s in counties Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary to develop a unique product offering that will assist them in competing more effectively for tourism business. A total of 15 independent B&B operators, five from each county, are involved in the project with Shannon Development and Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary County Councils. Four other countries Spain, France, Portugal, and Wales are also participating in the project. The project will hopefully lead to international networking opportunities for the B&B sector in the Region.”

Three networks of independent B&B operators in Thurles/Holycross/Templemore North Tipperary; East Clare and the Estuary Area Limerick have been established as part of the CANTATA 2 project.  Each network operates independently coming together for joint promotion and special seminars.  As well as the new tourism brochure for Co. Tipperary, Shannon Development has been working with B&B operators to devise a new website for all three locations which can be viewed at www.cantata2.ie.  The new tourism brochure for Thurles/Holycross/Templemore is available free of charge from Shannon Development Tourist Offices throughout the Shannon Region, or can be downloaded from the website www.cantata2.ie.

As president of Durlas Eile Eliogarty Memorial i would like to say that north Tipperary tourism board has done nothing to promote St Marys garden of remembrance the first and the only one of its kind in Ireland. Our committee has put Thurles on the international map we have visitors from all over Ireland and over seas visiting St Marys Garden of Remembrance every year going back to 2000 when the garden was first opened by the then Minister for Defence Micheal Smith. Also in that time we have had many V.I.P.’S attend our ceremony’s .Many times i have contacted your office sent information on St Marys garden of Remembrance with copy ‘s of our historical guide book a historical walk of Thurles .Councillor Jim Ryan has also left copy’s of our book with ye to date no one has come to visit any member of our committee and see what St Mary’s is about. Members of Down council came all the way from the north of Ireland to see what we had done because they wanted to do the same in there town we were chosen because it was the way to go as in reconciliation .Our achievements in St Marys garden has got recognition world wide and sadly your committee has turned a blind eye on St Marys Garden of remembrance. The President of Lebanon Michele Sleman awarded our committee the military medal of appreciation for all the work that was done over the year’s building a bond with the Lebanese people and the Irish people .St Marys Garden of Remembrance is also twinned with the Irish Memorial Garden in Tibnin South Lebanon located a short distance from camp shamrock where our Irish Troops are stationed .You people go on so much about promoting tourism in one’s town here we have great potential with what we have going for Thurles and once again you have ignore and passed us by.Our committee has many ideas as to how we can promote our town and in the coming months we will be putting a plan of action in place. This year we are planning to erect a memorial to all men women and children from Co Tipperary who died during the famine Is Mise John Wort ,President and P.R.O Durlas Eile Eliogarty Memorial Committee 0861528565
