Cashel Chamber of Commerce to withdraw their invitation to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to speak at their dinner

Kevin Brunnick of South Tipperary Sinn Féin has welcomed the decision of Cashel Chamber of Commerce to withdraw their invitation to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to speak at their dinner. Mr. Brunnick stated:
“At the start of September South Tipperary Sinn Féin in a letter to the Cashel Chamber of Commerce urged them not to proceed with their invitation to the former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to address their annual dinner. We did so as a reflection of the anger of the people of Co. Tipperary at the dire consequences of the policies pursued by the former Taoiseach and his Government colleagues. We were also reflecting the views widely expressed to us by people adversely affected by social welfare cuts, massive mortgage debt, the credit squeeze for small businesses and the massive rise in unemployment.
“If we forget the mistakes of the recent past we are condemned to repeat them. Former Taoiseach Ahern, in the months ahead, may wish to whitewash the disastrous policy mistakes of the Governments he led but such a whitewash cannot go unchallenged.
“We welcome the decision of the Chamber of Commerce to withdraw their invitation. It is of course their right to choose whom they invite to their functions. However, their decision in this case recognises the reality that there is no appetite in Sth. Tipperary for such a keynote speaker.”
