Upperchurch Walking Weekend Design a Poster Competition

The fifth annual Upperchurch Walking Weekend will be held this year on November 5th, 6th and 7th. The Weekend is the culmination of a successful year’s activity in promoting and developing the area as a centre for walking and associated leisure activities.

Upperchurch has been hailed as a leader in walks development and promotion in what is Ireland’s fastest growing pastime and tourist activity. This year the locality has been the site of the IFA’s walking promotion launch which was shown on RTE News and Upperchurch was recently visited by Christopher Somerville, the internationally known travel writer. Events such as meetings for tourist service providers and training courses for walk leaders have also been held. Most importantly of all, the walks are being used by an increasing number of people in groups and individually.

The program of events is broadly in line with previous years. The official opening on Fri. 5th will feature a couple of guest speakers. The most strenuous walk of 18 km around the hills of Upperchurch, for the very fit, starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. There will then be a choice of three shorter walks starting around midday. On Sunday there will be a relatively level 14 km walk starting at Rosmult at 11.30 a.m. with a choice of four shorter walks a little later. There will be a small registration charge for each walk with the usual free refreshments provided after each walk.

This year there will be a competition to design a poster with a walking theme, with prizes in three sections for primary school pupils, secondary school students and adults. Entries may be used to publicise the Upperchurch Walking Weekend or other events in the future. Primary school entries should be on A4 size paper and secondary school and adult entries should be on A3 paper. Slogans may be included with the artwork. Closing date is October 29th.

The organisers are making a special effort this year to provide after walk entertainment and thus provide even more enjoyment for walkers and non-walkers, locals and visitors alike as well as giving an opportunity to all types of talent to perform.

For further details visit www.upperchurch.ie or phone 0504 54443 weekdays 10 to 2 or 087 0518934 at other times. There will be a meeting every Wednesday night at 8.30 in Upperchurch Hall to plan for the event and all interested in helping are very welcome.
