COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

The draws for the quarter-finals of the County Senior Hurling Championship were made on Monday night following the last two round 2 games which saw wins for Mullinahone and Loughmore Castleiney. The quarter-final fixtures are as follows: Saturday, October 2 at Semple Stadium – 4pm Carrick Swan v Kildangan; 5.30pm Burgess v Clonoulty Rossmore; Sunday, October 3 at Semple Stadium – 2 pm Mullinahone v Toomevara; 3.30pm Loughmore Castleiney v Thurles Sarsfields. The winners qualify for the county semi-finals on October 17. Five of the quarter-finalists have won the last 13 county titles between them – Toomevara (8), Thurles Sarsfields (2), Clonoulty Rossmore (1), Loughmore Castleiney  (1) and Mullinahone (1). Carrick Swan won their only county senior hurling title in 1947, while Burgess and Kildangan have never won a county senior hurling title.

COUNTY MINOR FOOTBALL B CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Kilsheelan Kilcash who defeated Golden Kilfeacle by 2-9 to 1-9 in the County Minor B Football Final at New Inn on Saturday. It was Kilsheelan’s first county title at this grade so well done to all concerned. Johnny Ormonde captained the team. It was a good weekend overall for the South Division club as they won their divisional intermediate football title on Sunday.

COUNTY MINOR C HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Silvermines who won their first County Minor C Hurling title on Saturday at Newport where they defeated Ballinahinch by 2-14 to 1-11.

TIPPERARY GAA YEARBOOK

It’s that time of the year again when the preliminary work on the production of the Tipperary G.A.A. Yearbook commences. The deadline for the receipt of material, including obituary notices, is November 1. This year, the fantastic achievements of our Senior Hurlers will take centre stage not to mention our All-Ireland Under 21 Hurling success and the historic Munster Final victory of the Under 21 Footballers. The book will record the highlights of these achievements, as well as the efforts of the other county teams in hurling and football, and all the other G.A.A. activity within the county. It is hoped to have the book, which will be printed by the Nenagh Guardian, in the shops by Friday December 10th.  All material should be typed and sent to either Yearbook Committee Chairman, Seamus King (seamusjk@eircom.net) or Yearbook Committee Secretary John Smith (johnsmiththurles@eircom.net). All photos must be named and e-mailed to Seamus King or John Smith. Alternatively, photos can also be posted to John Smith, Bohernamona Road, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

OCTOBER TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW

The October Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw will be held this Friday, October 1 in McGraths Pub Puckane at 10pm. On the night Betty Gleeson from Kildangan will be presented with €15,000 having won 1st prize in the monthly draw in September. There will also be a presentation of €500 to local promoter, Catherine Gleeson. In addition Gerard & Mary Hogan will be presented with €12,000 having won second prize in the September draw Oliver Darcy (Shannon Rovers) collecting €400 as the promoter. Lotto winner cheques of €2,500 will be presented to Tom Murray (Clonakenny) and Patricia Sheeran (Moneygall). 2 x Cars along with numerous cash prizes will be given away on the night along with a Lotto jackpot of €5,000. Come along for what promises to be a night of celebration for the Kildangan GAA Club. The Liam MacCarthy Cup will also be present.

MACCARTHY CUP SCHOOLS VISITS

The schools visits by the MacCarthy Cup are continuing. We would like to thank all the teachers and pupils as well as local club officials who made the county players and officials so welcome on these visits and to acknowledge the great effort the schools have put into preparing for the visits. As some visits are subject to change at short notice, please contact the GAA Office in Thurles on 0504 22702 if you want to get details of the dates of visits in the coming week.

UNDER 17 FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

The County Under 17 Football Development Squad will take part in a Munster Competition for The Darryl Darcy Cup which was kindly sponsored by the Darcy Family of Shannon Rovers in memory of the late Darryl. Tipperary are away to Clare on Monday, October 4, at home in Dr. Morris Park on Monday 11th to Waterford and away to Limerick on Monday, October 18. The cup and plate finals will be played on Bank Holiday Monday October 25.

We extend our sympathy to the Donnelly family of Moycarkey-Borris on the death of Tommy Donnelly, former player with the Tipperary junior team, Moycarkey-Borris and the Tipperary club in New York and father of Ed, former County PRO and current Chairman of the County IT Committee; to the Heaney family of Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams on the death of Billy Heaney, former club chairman and father of 1996 All Ireland minor medallist Fergal; and to the Maher family of Borris-Ileigh on the death of Pat, former Borris-Ileigh player and father of Philip, All Star full back and All Ireland senior medallist in 2001. MID TIPP SCÓR AGM

The AGM of Mid Tipperary Scór will take place in Hayes Hotel on Wednesday, October 6 at 8.15pm. All clubs are asked to send representatives to this important meeting.

LAUNCH OF THE MORRIS CODE BY JIMMY MORRIS

GAA President Christy Cooney will launch a new and highly entertaining book, The Morris Code at the Hibernian Inn in Nenagh at 9pm on this Thursday September 30. The author is Borrisokane native and long-time stalwart of both Borrisokane and Nenagh Éire Óg clubs, Jimmy Morris. Now residing in Canada, Jimmy has penned what he describes as “the musings of a Tipperary GAA club man”. The book pulls no punches and is a must read for anybody interested in GAA affairs in Tipperary. It will be on sale in newsagents and bookshops around the county and beyond.

SAQ FOUNDATION COURSE

The North Tipperary Sports Partnership in association with SAQ Ireland is hosting a Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ) Foundation Course on Friday, October 8 in Thurles Sarsfields GAA Complex from 4pm – 10pm. SAQ is a system of training that enhances performance in all sports. It improves acceleration, speed, fast arm action, footwork, response time and explosiveness; increases visual awareness, hand to eye co-ordination, and general manual dexterity; and promotes control, energy utilisation and strength development. For further information see the SAQ Ireland website (www.saqireland.net). There are a limited number of places on this course, which will be offered on a first come first served basis. To secure a place, payment must be made to the North Tipperary Sports Partnership before Friday, October 8, 2010. The cost to participants from North Tipperary is €45 (subsidised by NTSP). ACTIVE LEADERSHIP COURSE

North Tipperary Sports Partnership will hold an Active Leadership training course on Saturday, October 16 in Roscrea (venue to be confirmed). The Active Leadership Course is an Irish Sports Council programme designed specifically for any community volunteer who is actively involved, or plans to be involved in local youth clubs, community groups, workplace clubs, sports clubs or community centres. Those who successfully complete the course will have an understanding of their role as a Leader, and will have acquired the awareness, knowledge and skills needed to run enjoyable and safe physical activities.  The course will incorporate all the different aspects of the role of leaders including Communication, Observation and Group Management. The Active Leadership Award is highly recommended for anyone, young or old, who is already involved, or is considering getting involved in coaching/volunteer work or community work. Trainee leaders must be over 18. Upon assessment and completion, each candidate will be awarded an Active Leadership Award Certificate, certified by the Irish Sports Council.
