Mayor Morris expresses his disappointment at the refusal of Waterways Ireland to engage with local stakeholders on the future of Lough Derg

At our Nenagh area meeting on Monday 13th Sept we were told of the absolute reluctance of Waterways Ireland to meet public ally the important stakeholders of Lough Derg. I have been in contact with a number of stakeholders who have a vast knowledge of Lough Derg and have been responsible for its up keep locally. Quite frankly the attitude of the public ally funded Waterways Ireland defies logic.

There are very pressing issues that need urgent discussion including Waterways Ireland new proposed bye laws ( submissions need to be in by 0ctober 15) and the proposed theft of water from Lough Derg to feed the already wasteful Dublin City water supply.. At our meeting today we agreed to engage with local groups and get their viewpoints before we have a joint Nenagh and Newport council meeting with Waterways Ireland. I would encourage any stakeholder in Lough Derg with any views on the future of the lake to contact myself or any local councillor as soon as they can. I can take submissions at or by phone at 0872859125. Yours sincerely Cllr. Séamie Morris 13/09/10
