Summer Youth Arts Programme at The Source, Thurles

Every year, The Source Arts Centre is inundated with requests for activities for young people. The response has been to set up and run the hugely successful summer youth arts programme. This year things are going from strength to strength with Tomorrow, a cross art form summer camp running from 19th to 24th July, where the young people will explore what they think the future will bring and follow up with an exhibition to be held in The Source Gallery until 4th September. This is an amazing opportunity for young people aged between 11 and 17 to get their views across, and we all know how important that is to teenagers!

From 12th to 16th July, there is a teen comedy summer camp at The Source. This is the chance all the budding future stand up comedians of Thurles have been waiting for. During the week long camp, participants will learn all the finer points of how to put together and deliver a stand up routine, as well as working with improvised comedy. As if that’s not enough, the group then have the chance to perform in front of a real audience supporting Choke Comedy Improv on Friday 16th July. So come on all you future Tommy Tiernans, Neil Delameres and Andrew Maxwells!

For all budding actors and actresses, the North Star 2010 Summer Drama Camp is on between Monday 26th to Friday 30th July. Run by Joanne Quinn and Aoife Carry, two of the best youth theatre leaders in Ireland, this summer camp promises to give a great background into putting on a play as well as having a brilliant time with lots of fun. There are two groups. One for 7 – 11 year olds and one for 12 – 17 year olds, so there is something for all ages.

In August, it is the turn of the DJ’s to take control. There is a three day DJ workshop taking place from 3rd to 5th August which covers everything from setting up equipment, discussing different styles of music, choosing sets and keeping the mix flowing. The professionals will be on hand to discuss any other queries that may arise. The course is run by Max Conti and Antonio O’Dwyer of DeepintoTheBowelsOfHouse, one of Dublin’s biggest club nights.
