Tipperary GAA Scene 25th May 2010

All roads lead to Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday next, May 30th for the much anticipated Tipperary v Cork Munster Senior Hurling Championship quarter final. The game commences at 4pm. Sunday’s game will be the 80th championship meeting between these 2 great rivals with Cork winning 36 of the previous 79 encounters, Tipperary 35, 7 draws and 1 game abandoned. They have previously met 11 times in Munster first round games with 5 wins each and 1 draw. It will be the 7th year in a row that Tipperary and Cork will meet in the Senior Hurling Championship.  The 2000 Munster Final was their previous meeting before 2004 and prior to 2000 their last meeting was in 1992. Of the last 6 meetings Tipp won the most recent 3 while Cork won the first 3. So the history books tell us that it should be close on Sunday! Needless to say we hope for a Tipp win but it will not be easy to do. We wish the players and the team management every success for the game and no doubt there will be a large Tipp following on Leeside to cheer them on. The game will be shown live on RTE television. The Tipperary team will be announced at 9pm on Thursday night.

Tipperary’s Intermediate hurlers will play Cork in the curtain raiser in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday. The game commences at 2pm  and we wish the players and team management the very best of luck for the game. We also would ask Tipperary supporters to go to the grounds early and support the Intermediate team.

Blackrock Hurling Club have informed us that they are operating a Car Park (€5.00) and Food Service, in Church Road on Sunday May 30th for the Tipperary v Cork game. The Club is within walking distance of Pairc Uí Chaoimh and is convenient for supporters to park there. Blackrock have always welcomed Tipperary visitors so keep them in mind if you are looking to park close to the stadium.

The first draw of the 2010/11 Clubs Draw took place on Friday last in the HQ bar in Thurles. A big crowd turned out and enjoyed a very good night’s entertainment to celebrate the commencement of the 23rd year of this fantastic draw. The Star Prize of the Land cruiser or €50,000 cash alternative was won by Barry O’Brien of the Nenagh Éire Óg. Now resident in Dublin, Barry is a long-time loyal Nenagh and Tipperary supporters.  The second car or €12,000 cash prize was also sold by Nenagh Éire Óg and the lucky winner was Jack Ryan of Ardcroney. The jersey set went to the famed Grangemockler Club in South Tipperary. Thanks to Draw Co-Ordinator, Ger Bradley, the Draw Committee chaired by Peter Byrne, County Secretary, Tim Floyd and all the staff in the GAA office in Thurles and all the club promoters who have worked so hard to make the draw a success again despite the difficult times we live in. We would encourage Clubs to keep recruiting members over the next few weeks ahead of the June draw which will take place on Friday, June 11th in the Hibernian Inn in Nenagh.

The newly renovated Tipperary GAA Merchandise shop was officially opened by Tipperary Senior Hurling Captain, Eoin Kelly on Saturday last. Also present were Tipp senior hurling panellists Larry Corbett, Shane McGrath, Brian O’Meara and Paddy Stapleton. Well done to all involved with the renovations. Thanks in particular to Marian Graham, who worked so hard to get the shop renovated,  to the ladies who run the shop with her – Carmel Finn and Mags Meighan, to Tim Floyd for all his work, and to the Molumby Brothers, Thurles who did the renovation work. It was with regret and sadness that we learnt last week of the death of Michael (Mick) Cowan of Moyne Templetuohy and Borris-Ileigh who passed away after a long and bravely fought illness.  Mick won All Ireland and Munster club senior hurling titles with Borris-Ileigh in the 1986/87 season. He won 3 county senior hurling titles with Borris-Ileigh in 1981, 1983 and 1986 and a county senior hurling title with his native Moyne Templetuohy in 1971.  He won 4 North Tipperary senior hurling titles with Borris-Ileigh and 2 Mid Tipperary senior hurling titles with Moyne Templetuohy. He also won a county minor hurling title with Moyne Templetuohy in 1964. He represented Tipperary at minor, u-21 and senior hurling and captained the Tipperary senior hurling team for the 1972 championship replay against Cork. He also represented Tipperary at minor, u-21 and junior football. Mick will be remembered as a very fine hurler and footballer but most of all as a true gentleman.  Tipperary County Board extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Breed, his daughters Gina, Margaret, Marie, Joanne and Sarah, sons Aidan, Ciaran and Niall, his mother Johanna, his grandchildren, his brothers and sister, all his family and friends and the Borris-Ileigh and Moyne Templtuohy clubs on their sad bereavement.

The Association will shortly begin the production of personalised 2010 membership cards. These cards will contain each member’s name, club, county, membership type and membership number. The list of members for each club will be taken directly from the on-line membership system. Please ensure that your clubs registration is up to date and correct. Any person who is not registered on this system will not be allocated a card. Please also ensure that the club name is correct. The cards will be issued to each club via the County Committee office.
