The Eireball Run 2010. A convoy of classic VWs near you soon

The Eireball run is now in it’s 5th year and this year promises to  be  biggest and best to date.  Eireball 2010 will be taking place from  7th  to 14th August with overnight stops at several locations around the country. This unique charity event is based on a grueling week long sponsored drive along a challenging route around the island of  Ireland in a convoy of classic Volkswagens. Considering that the average age of the vehicles is 30 years old mayhem and breakdowns are all part of the fun when on the Eireball Run!
The iconic VW Bus is the vehicle of choice of most participants but Beetles and Karman Ghias have also taken part. The quirky classics from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and further afield, crammed with children, dogs and surfboards, dedicate a week of their summer to the Eireball charities. With the ever present talk of recession what better way to spend your holiday than travelling around  Ireland with  your camper van or tent? Petrol and food are the only expenses as the camping spots are all fields or gardens belonging to members of the VW  dedicated type2ireland (www.type2ireland.org), a diverse group  including business owners, professionals, trades people, musicians and  comedians to mention just a few, or campsites donated to us by  generous members of the public.
The public have also very generously donated sponsor prizes such as Win a Weekend in a Campervan, Win a week in a Property in Kerry and many many more to come.  There is one raffle ticket given for every €10 donated. (http://eireball.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=100&Itemid=108)
To date over €30,000 has been raised by type2ireland, Ireland’s largest online Volkswagen community, and 100% of the proceeds were divided between the two Eireball charities which were previously Share a Dream Foundation – an Irish Children’s charity which make dreams a reality for sick children and  Bridges Across Borders in Cambodia – improving the quality of life of  some of the worlds poorest people.
This year we have decided to donate half of the proceeds to The Haven  Foundation which are involved in building homes for those devasted by the earhquake in Haiti. They are our chosen charity along with Share a  Dream Foundation here in Ireland.
As you will appreciate, despite our greatest efforts, media support is essential for the success of Eireball. Someone has to warn the country we are coming!!!  Last year we featured on Nationwide and TV3’s Ireland AM.
One of our members wrote an article which was  published in the  UK magazine Volkworld Camper and Bus after last years run.  (http://www.volksworld.com/vwcamperandbus/magazine.html) .  The article has been posted on our website here:  http://eireball.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=105&Itemid=113 if you what to see what the Eireball run is really and truly all about.

  1. Wow, looks fantastic. I missed my issue of Volkswagon Camper. I must try and get a back issue so that can read the article.
