Top Prices for Spring Lamb this Easter

IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman James Murphy said spring lambs are in very scarce supply this Easter with local butchers paying up to €130/head for this top quality lamb.  He said these prices are equivalent to €6.50 to €6.80/kg.

James Murphy said hoggets are also in scarce supply with factories paying up to €5.00/kg.

The IFA sheep farmers leader said to date this year the supply at the factories is back 98,000 head with weekly kills running at 30,000 head or 3,000/4,000 head down on last years levels.  He said hogget numbers will remain tight for the rest of the spring and spring lamb supplies will be very scarce for the month of April.

James Murphy said the French market is returning the equivalent of €5.15/kg for grade 1 Irish hoggets.  In addition, he said spring lamb prices are trading at the equivalent of €6.20 – €6.30/kg in Northern Ireland.
