Tipperary GAA Scene 16th Feb 2010

by County PRO Ger Ryan

The 2010 hurling season at national level kicks off on Saturday evening next, February 20th just as it ended in 2009 with Tipperary playing Kilkenny. Tipp and Kilkenny have played in 59 previous League games with Tipp winning 28 times, Kilkenny 25 and 6 draws. Having lost to Kilkenny 3 times last year, Liam Sheedy’s charges will want to put down an early marker for this season andhave been preparing diligently as always. They defeated Dublin by 1-20 to 1-17 in a senior hurling challenge game last Saturday night under lights on the artificial grass pitch at St. Brigid’s GAA Club in Castleknock. The Tipperary team and scorers were: Darren Gleeson; Conor O’Brien, Paul Curran, Diarmaid Fitzgerald; Brendan Maher, Declan Fanning (Captain), Shane Maher; Benny Dunne (0-1), Gearóid Ryan (0-1); Seamus Hennessy (0-7, 0-3 frees), Hugh Maloney (0-2), John Devane (0-2); Pat Kerwick (0-1), Micheal Webster (1-0), Patrick Maher (0-1). Subs: Michael Heffernan for Pat Kerwick, Seamus Callanan (0-4, 0-2 frees) for Micheal Webster, Paul Kelly for Hugh Maloney, Jody Brennan (0-1) for Seamus Hennessy, Shane McGrath for John Devane.

The All Ireland Vocational Schools Senior Hurling Final between Tipperary and Kilkenny will precede Satruday evening’s Allianz GAA Hurling National League game at Semple Stadium. It will commence at 5.30pm and extra time will be played in the event of a draw.

Tipperary’s Senior Footballers had a very disappointing result against Kildare at Semple Stadium on Saturday night last when they were defeated by 1-17 to 0-8.  Their next game will be on Saturday evening March 6th against Down in Páirc Esler in Newry.  Although both teams were promoted from Division 3 last year with Tipp as champions, they have had contrasting fortunes in this year’s League campaign with Down on top of the table with 4 points while Tipperary are still seeking their first points. The Tipperary panel will travel to Spain on Sunday for a short intensive training camp and the benefits of that will hopefully yield a positive result from the long trip North on March 6th.

Congratulations to Conor Gleeson (Manager – Boherlahan Dualla); Barney Loughnane (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Michael Ryan (Fethard) and Eamonn O’Dwyer (Arravale Rovers) who have been appointed as the management team for the Tipperary Intermediate hurlers in 2010.

John Doyle (Holycross-Ballycahill), who represented Tipperary at senior hurling from 1949 to 1967 and won 8 All Ireland senior hurling medals celebrated his 80th birthday last week. We congratulate John on reaching this milestone and wish him well for the future. He is and will undoubtedly remain one of the all time heroes of hurling both in Tipperary and nationally.
